Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) as bottom/top seal

A geosynthetic clay liner is a factor-produced mineral sealing mat which mostly consists of two layers of non-woven geotextile with an intermediate layer of sodium bentonite powder. The two layers of geotextile are jointed together by a sewing process (needle punched non-wovens). This creates a perfectly stable mat with high internal shear resistance. If the geosynthetic clay liner comes into contact with water the sodium bentonite swells up and thus creates a watertight mineral layer.

Geosynthetic clay liners are mainly used for sealing ponds, for IBC materials, bottom and top seals for waste and residual material recovery, water and emergency reservoirs, oil tank terminals and other industrial applications.

Geosynthetic clay liners are usually installed in a dry environment. However, Genap has developed a technique that allows the GCL to also be installed underwater. This means that we can also install seals in ports and canals that cannot be dried out.
